A lot of people find it difficult to think of a theme for junk journaling. As a result, they spend a long time wondering what their spread should be, and even more time to actually get down to junk journal.
Did you know, you don't need a big topic, or sensational news, or strong emotions, to count them as a theme. Even a color can be a theme.
In this Journal With Me tutorial, you'll see how I used one color i.e. purple, and played around with that to make a creative journal spread.
Materials required:
A paper from a book
Colored sheet on which you'll base your theme
Some patterned paper (I took it out of a magazine)
Black pen
Colored pens
Lace (optional)
Stickers (optional)
A tag (can be handmade too)
Step 1:
To begin junk journaling, I tore a rectangular paper from a book, and pasted it on the top left corner of my journal. On this piece, I tore and pasted a purple-colored square.

Step 2:
To add some more texture to the spread, I pasted a paper with a pattern. You can either get it from a magazine through fussy cutting; or you can even draw a pattern, or use painting techniques like marble painting, etc to get the desired pattern.

Step 3:
To maintain harmony, it is also necessary to keep a balance of the patterns and solid colors. To do the same and to add layers as well, I pasted a different purple.
At the same time, I also pasted a tag on the other page.

Step 4:
The green piece that I pasted in this step is from a lace. Instead of pasting a paper, a lace adds some texture to the junk journal spread. In place of this, you can even use flowers made out of ribbon.
At the bottom, I have again pasted a torn page from a book.

Step 5:
To move away from the straight lines and torn edges, I planned to cut waves. I pasted these waves above the tag.
From the same cutting, I got some more waves, one of which I pasted in the bottom left corner, and the second one I pasted along the edge of the patterned paper.

Step 6:
Next, I wrote the word 'Purple'. As such it holds no significance, but I just felt it highlighted my theme. I chose the color green because it somehow matched the pattern, and using a different ink to write the name of color added some irony.
I also pasted stickers, which I had from before. You can even draw stickers and paste them. At the same time, I wrote whatever was in my mind in the moment, and that didn't necessarily match with my theme (because that's not necessary)

Step 7:
To complete the journal spread, I drew some doodles in the blank space and colored them. I got the inspiration for these doodles from Pinterest.

I hope through this Junk Journal tutorial, you got some idea of how you can select a theme for your junk journal. Now, don't wait! Select a color, narrow down few supplies, and create your happy piece!
Just Begin.
